About Abbotsbury Abbey
Abbotsbury Abbey in Dorset is a Grade I listed site managed by English Heritage in guardianship.
Once one of the county's wealthiest Benedictine monasteries, little remains above ground today beyond earthworks and fragments of the abbey precinct.
Visitors can also see St Catherine's Chapel on the hill above, which commands views over the Fleet lagoon and Chesil Beach.

The abbey was founded in the second quarter of the 11th century by Orc, a thegn of King Cnut, and his wife Tola, who endowed it generously with land in the surrounding area. It grew into a major local power, holding eight manors and villages across Dorset by the later Middle Ages. At the dissolution of the monasteries the last abbot surrendered the house, and the site passed to Sir Giles Strangways.
Architecture of Abbotsbury Abbey
Almost nothing of the monastic church survives above ground, and most of what can be seen today is earthworks marking the former precinct. A large medieval tithe barn connected to the abbey still stands nearby, one of the few substantial structures to survive the dissolution.
Worth knowing
St Catherine's Chapel sits on the hill above the abbey site and is managed as part of the same English Heritage site. The chapel is traditionally associated with local custom, where women are said to have prayed for husbands, accompanied by a rhyme asking the saint for a mate 'soon'.
