History of Abingdon County Hall Museum

The hall is traditionally attributed to Christopher Kempster, a master mason who later worked with Christopher Wren on St Paul's Cathedral. For much of its history it served as the county hall of Berkshire, a role it lost when local government boundary changes in 1974 moved Abingdon into Oxfordshire. The building has been owned by the local authority for its civic functions throughout this time.

Architecture of Abingdon County Hall Museum

Built in English Baroque style, the hall has rusticated stone piers supporting an open ground-floor arcade, with a grander panelled chamber above that once housed the assizes and county business. It is regarded as one of the finest surviving 17th-century town halls in England.
