The church's main fabric dates from the fourteenth century, with the tower added in the fifteenth century. Beeby itself is a shrunken medieval village, now a scattered hamlet of around 115 people along the Barkby Brook. The church passed into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust after falling out of regular parish use, a common fate for small rural churches serving dwindling congregations.
Architecture of All Saints Church, Beeby
Built of distinctive orange ironstone, the church shows fourteenth-century work in its body and a fifteenth-century west tower, topped by a spire that appears to have been cut short, giving rise to its local 'sawn off' nickname. Carved corbels of varying dates appear both inside and outside the building.
Worth knowing
The church's truncated spire has long been the focus of village legend, though the exact story behind its unusual shape is not recorded. It is a Grade II* listed building, reflecting its architectural and historic significance despite its remote setting.
