The mansion was built in 1785 for Noel Hill, 1st Baron Berwick, and remained the Berwick family seat for over a century and a half. The last owner, the 8th Lord Berwick, bequeathed Attingham to the National Trust on his death in 1947, along with much of its original collection. The estate's fortunes had swung between grand entertaining and near financial ruin under earlier Berwick heirs, giving the house an unusually intact record of both Regency wealth and later decline.
Architecture
The house was designed by Scottish architect George Steuart in Neoclassical style, with a Picture Gallery added around 1805 traditionally attributed to John Nash. Its curved portico and grand entrance hall remain among the best-preserved Regency interiors in the region.
Worth knowing
The park's landscape was shaped with advice from Humphry Repton, whose input on the grounds is documented in surviving estate papers. The 8th Lord Berwick's wife, Teresa, played a significant role in preserving the estate's contents before it passed to the National Trust.
Gardens & grounds
The walled garden has been restored to grow produce and flowers much as it would have done in the estate's working years, and forms a distinct visitor area separate from the wider deer park.
