About this place

Belton House stands just outside Grantham in Lincolnshire, built between 1685 and 1687 as a country seat in the Restoration style.

The National Trust has cared for the house and its estate since 1984.

Inside, the state rooms hold one of the finest collections of furniture and portraits kept in any Trust property, largely because the Brownlow family who built it remained in residence for nearly three centuries.

The wider parkland includes formal gardens, an orangery, and a boathouse designed by Anthony Salvin in the 1830s.

History

The house was built for the Brownlow family, who held Belton for generation after generation until the estate passed to the National Trust in 1984. Anthony Salvin, better known for his castle restorations, designed the boathouse on the estate's ornamental pond, completed in the late 1830s. The house is listed Grade I, a reflection of how completely its original character has survived.

Architecture

Belton House is built in a restrained Restoration style, with symmetrical fronts and a hipped roof typical of English country houses of its period. Later additions, including an orangery, softened the formal exterior with Regency-era touches.

Worth knowing

Belton House has featured in period drama productions, drawn to the completeness of its original furnishings and interiors.

Gardens & grounds

The formal gardens and wider parkland, including an orangery and an ornamental lake, are a significant part of a visit and are looked after alongside the house.
