History

Thomas Harley, a London banker and politician, commissioned Berrington Hall in the 1770s. The house passed through several families by marriage and inheritance before the National Trust acquired it in 1957. Its grounds were designed by Capability Brown, created in the final years before his death in 1783.

Architecture

The house is a Grade I listed neoclassical building, designed by Henry Holland. The interiors include elaborate plasterwork ceilings typical of the late Georgian period.

Worth knowing

Henry Holland went on to design major commissions in his career. Berrington represents one of his earlier significant country house works. The park is considered one of Capability Brown's last complete design schemes.
