About Biddulph Grange
Biddulph Grange is a Victorian garden in Biddulph, Staffordshire, built as a series of separate themed sections rather than one continuous landscape.
Visitors move between areas designed to evoke Egypt, China and the Himalayas, each screened from the next by hedges, tunnels and rockwork.
The National Trust has cared for the garden since 1988.
It is a garden of surprises rather than vistas, with each turn revealing a different world.

The garden was created from 1842 by James Bateman and his wife Maria, keen plant collectors who built a succession of enclosed garden rooms on the site. Bateman worked with marine painter Edward William Cooke on some of the design, drawing on plants and ideas gathered from his wide botanical contacts. The house itself passed through various uses after the Bateman family left and is now in private hands, separate from the garden the Trust manages.
Architecture of Biddulph Grange
The garden is arranged as a sequence of concealed compartments linked by tunnels, rockwork and clipped hedging, a design approach associated with High Victorian taste for eclectic, theatrical garden-making.
Worth knowing
The Egyptian section features topiary obelisks and a tunnel topped by a topiary pyramid, reflecting Victorian fascination with ancient Egypt expressed in garden form.
