About Blakeney Point

Blakeney Point is a shingle spit on the North Norfolk coast, extending roughly four miles into the North Sea from the village of Blakeney.

The National Trust has managed it since 1912, one of its earliest acquisitions for nature conservation.

The site is known for grey and common seal colonies and breeding terns, protected within the Blakeney National Nature Reserve.

Most visitors arrive on foot via the coastal path or by boat from Blakeney or Morston quay.

History of Blakeney Point

The National Trust acquired Blakeney Point in 1912 following a public fundraising appeal, making it one of the Trust's first properties acquired for nature conservation. The campaign involved several key figures including Dr Sydney Long, a Norfolk naturalist who would later found the Norfolk Naturalists' Trust in 1926—Britain's first county wildlife trust. This acquisition is often viewed as a landmark moment in the broader conservation movement. Blakeney village itself developed as a prosperous medieval port, though its harbour gradually silted up over time, leaving the point and its marshes in a relatively undisturbed state.

Architecture of Blakeney Point

The only built structure on the spit is a former lifeboat house, thought to date from the early twentieth century, which the National Trust now uses as a seasonal base for wardens and visitors.
