About this place

Blenheim Palace stands at Woodstock in Oxfordshire, built in the early eighteenth century as the family seat of the Dukes of Marlborough.

It is the only country house in England to carry the title 'palace' without belonging to the monarch or a bishop.

The estate is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its grounds shaped by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown across more than 2,000 acres of parkland and formal gardens.

History

Blenheim Palace was built between 1705 and 1722 as a gift from Queen Anne to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, in recognition of his victory at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. The architect Sir John Vanbrugh, working with Nicholas Hawksmoor, designed the house on a scale intended to rival royal residences, which caused years of dispute over its funding. It has remained in the Marlborough family since.

Architecture

Vanbrugh's design is regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of English Baroque architecture, with Hawksmoor contributing to its detailing and construction.

Worth knowing

Sir Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace in 1874, while his parents were staying with his grandfather, the 7th Duke of Marlborough.

Gardens & grounds

The park was landscaped by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown in the 1760s, and the palace sits within more than 2,000 acres of parkland and formal gardens recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
