About this place
A yew tree by the entrance drive at Breamore House is said to be a thousand years old, older by far than the house it stands beside.
Breamore House itself is an Elizabethan manor near Fordingbridge in Hampshire, set between woodland and open parkland running towards the New Forest.
Inside, the rooms hold a notable collection of paintings and furniture built up over generations of the same family.
The house is part of the working Breamore Estate, which also runs a farm shop and countryside museum on site.
History
The house was completed in 1583 for the Dodington family, built on the site of the earlier Breamore Priory. A major fire in 1856 destroyed much of the interior, and the house was substantially restored afterwards. Sir Edward Hulse, a baronet and physician to Queen Anne and to Kings George I and II, purchased the estate in the 18th century, and his descendants live there still.
Architecture
Breamore House is an Elizabethan mansion completed in 1583, built over the remains of Breamore Priory. It carries a Grade II* listing, reflecting the survival of much of its Tudor structure despite 18th-century alterations and rebuilding after the 1856 fire.
Worth knowing
The house passed to Sir Edward Hulse, physician to Queen Anne and to Kings George I and II, whose family still occupies it. Through marriage into the Levett family of Sussex, the Hulses acquired heirlooms including pieces once belonging to Richard Levett, a Lord Mayor of London.
Gardens & grounds
The house stands with forest on one side and open parkland running to the New Forest on the other, with a yew tree by the drive reckoned to be a thousand years old.
