About this place

Lower Brockhampton is a timber-framed manor house dating from the late 14th century, set within a moat on the Brockhampton Estate near Bromyard in Herefordshire.

The house is reached across a timber-framed gatehouse built in the Tudor period (1530-40).

The wider estate covers 1,700 acres, comprising 1,000 acres of farmland and 700 acres of woodland, and includes the largest orchard the National Trust cares for anywhere in the country.

The National Trust has managed Brockhampton since 1946, when Colonel John Lutley left the estate to them.

The manor house closes on Mondays outside school holidays and bank holidays.

History

Colonel John Lutley left the estate to the National Trust in 1946. His family had held Brockhampton for more than twenty generations, though the surname changed several times through marriage over the centuries. In 2010 the Trust carried out a major restoration of the manor house using traditional wattle and daub methods. A 2012 archaeological dig on the estate uncovered building foundations thought to belong to Studmarsh, a lost medieval village.

Architecture

Lower Brockhampton is a timber-framed hall house typical of the Welsh Marches building tradition, set within a moat with a separate timber-framed gatehouse built in the Tudor period (1530-40) standing at its approach.

Gardens & grounds

The estate includes parkland with specimen trees and 700 acres of woodland, alongside the National Trust's largest orchard.
