About Carlton Towers
In 1873 Henry Stapleton, 9th Baron Beaumont, began rebuilding Carlton Towers into the Gothic Revival mansion that stands today, set in 250 acres of parkland near Selby in North Yorkshire.
It is Grade I listed and remains a lived-in family home rather than a museum, currently run by Lord and Lady Gerald Fitzalan Howard.
The house is used for weddings, private events and overnight stays.
There is no membership scheme here; visits happen through booked tours, stays or events rather than general opening hours.

The present house encases an earlier manor dating from 1614, rebuilt by Henry Stapleton, 9th Baron Beaumont between 1873 and 1875 to designs by architect Edward Welby Pugin. His father, Miles Stapleton, 8th Baron Beaumont, had inherited the Beaumont title in 1840 after it had sat in abeyance since 1507, and the 9th Baron sold off much of the estate to pay for the rebuilding. When he died of pneumonia without an heir in 1892, the house passed to his younger brother, and it remains in the same family today under Edward Fitzalan-Howard, 18th Duke of Norfolk, who has made it the home of his brother, Lord Gerald Fitzalan-Howard.
Architecture of Carlton Towers
The house is a Gothic Revival design by Edward Welby Pugin, who incorporated the earlier 1614 manor house within his larger 1870s structure rather than demolishing it.
Gardens & grounds at Carlton Towers
The house sits within a 250-acre park.
