Chavenage House stands just outside Tetbury in Gloucestershire, a Grade I listed Elizabethan manor built in 1576.
Pevsner described it as the ideal sixteenth-century Cotswold stone manor house.
The Lowsley-Williams family has owned it for six generations and still lives there.
Visits are by reservation, usually as guided tours led by the family themselves.

The house was built in 1576 on the edge of the Cotswolds and has remained largely unchanged since. It sits within a 2,000-acre estate that has belonged to the Lowsley-Williams family for six generations, with James and Emma Lowsley-Williams now its custodians.
Architecture
Chavenage is an Elizabethan Cotswold stone manor house that retains much of its original character. Pevsner singled it out as the ideal example of the type in his Buildings of England series.
Worth knowing
The house played Trenwith, the Poldark family seat owned by Charles Poldark, in the television series Poldark. Family members regularly lead the guided tours themselves, and their own accounts of Chavenage's history are part of the visit.
