About this place
Down House in Downe, in the London Borough of Bromley, was Charles Darwin's home for forty years until his death in 1882.
The house dates from the early eighteenth century, though Darwin made extensive alterations during his time there.
It is Grade I listed.
Here he wrote On the Origin of Species, published in 1859.
English Heritage now cares for the property and opens it to visitors.
The garden retains the Sandwalk, the original path Darwin laid out and used as a thinking space throughout his working life.
