About this place
Dunstaffnage Castle stands on a promontory of conglomerate rock at the mouth of Loch Etive, near Oban in Argyll and Bute.
The current structure dates from the thirteenth century, though the site is thought to have been fortified long before that.
For centuries it was held by the Campbells of Dunstaffnage, and a branch of that family still serves as hereditary Captain of the castle.
Historic Environment Scotland manages the site.
Flora MacDonald, who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape after Culloden, was briefly imprisoned here in 1746.
