About this place
Eilean Donan Castle stands on a small tidal island at the meeting point of three sea lochs in the Scottish Highlands.
Founded in the thirteenth century, it is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland.
Government forces destroyed it in 1719, and it lay in ruins for nearly two centuries before being rebuilt, with work completed in 1932.
The reconstruction was carried out by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap, whose family connection to the site drove the lengthy restoration effort.
