Everingham Hall

History

James Firth enlarged the house between 1845 and 1848, adding a north wing and connecting it directly to the newly built Catholic chapel next door. It served as a country club from 1946 until Anne Fitzalan-Howard restored it as a private home in 1962, engaging architect Francis Johnson to strip away Firth's Victorian additions and return the house to something closer to Carr's original design. It was given grade I listed status in 1967.

Architecture

The house is built of red brick with stone quoins and a slate roof, following John Carr's Palladian scheme of the 1760s. Francis Johnson's 1962–63 remodelling deliberately reversed the mid-nineteenth-century enlargements by James Firth, favouring the original eighteenth-century proportions.

Worth knowing

The 1960s restoration was carried out for the Fitzalan-Howard family, associated with the Dukes of Norfolk, who returned the house to private use after its years as a country club.

Gardens & grounds

The park preserves elements of a medieval deer park layered with later designed landscapes, the earliest phase in the 1730s and 40s guided by the noted gardener Thomas Knowlton of nearby Londesborough.
