Eyam Hall

History

Eyam Hall was built in 1672 for the Wright family, who held the property for generations afterwards. The house was raised a few years after the village's plague outbreak of 1665 to 1666, when residents chose to isolate themselves to stop the disease spreading further, a decision associated with the rector William Mompesson.

Architecture

The hall is built of stone in a restrained Jacobean style typical of Derbyshire manor houses of the period, with mullioned windows and a plain gabled roofline.

Worth knowing

Eyam Hall sits beside one of England's best-known plague villages, where residents sealed themselves off in 1665 to contain an outbreak carried in by a bundle of infected cloth. The Wright family's long tenure of the hall makes it one of the few Peak District manor houses to have remained with its founding family across generations.

Gardens & grounds

A walled garden survives beside the house, giving the manor a quiet, enclosed setting close to the village centre.
