About this place

Finchingfield Guildhall stands at Church Hill in the Essex village of Finchingfield, beside the entrance to St John the Baptist churchyard. This timber-framed building dates from the 15th century, with 17th century additions. It is Grade I listed and unusually owned by the village itself rather than a family or trust. The Guildhall is a member property of Historic Houses, with paid entry for members.

Once listed as a building at risk, the Guildhall underwent restoration completed in 2013, work recognised for its carpentry and pargeting. An oriel window was reinstated during the project. Finds made during the works are now on display inside. Over the centuries the building has served shops and other community functions. Today its hall, library and exhibition room continue that civic use.

History

The Guildhall was once listed as a building at risk before restoration completed in 2013 brought it back into good repair, work recognised for its carpentry and pargeting. An oriel window was reinstated during the project, and finds made during the works are now on display inside. Over the centuries the building has held shops and other community functions. Today its hall, library and exhibition room continue that civic use.

Architecture

The Guildhall is a timber-framed structure combining 15th century origins with 17th century additions, with decorative pargeting and a restored oriel window among its notable features.
