About this place

Floors Castle was built in 1721 to a design by William Adam, and stands on the north bank of the River Tweed near Kelso in the Scottish Borders.

It is the seat of the Duke of Roxburghe, and the Ker family has held the estate for over three centuries.

William Playfair remodelled the castle from the late 1830s through to 1847, giving it the distinctive roofline of turrets and pepper-pot towers that defines it today.

A holly tree on the grounds is said to mark the spot where James II of Scotland was killed by an exploding cannon in 1460.
