About this place
Gleneagles House stands near Auchterarder in Perthshire, seat of the Haldane family since the 12th century.
The current mansion, with its east and west pavilions, represents an unfinished 18th-century design that was never completed.
Because of this, the house has an unusual layout reflecting the abandoned original scheme.
It belongs to the Historic Houses association, and visitors on tours can also see St Mungo's Chapel and the ruined Gleneagles Castle nearby.
History
The Haldane family's original stronghold was Gleneagles Castle, a tower house that now stands as a ruin on the estate. Across the centuries family members were caught up in some of Scotland's defining episodes, from the Covenanters and the ill-fated Darien scheme to the 1707 Act of Union and naval service at the Battle of Camperdown. The present house represents an unfinished 18th-century attempt to replace the castle with a full mansion, a project that stalled and left the family's home in its current, part-built form.
Architecture
The house's east and west pavilions survive from an 18th-century design intended to be a much larger mansion, which was never completed. The building reflects the abandoned original scheme in its unusual layout.
Worth knowing
Members of the Haldane family have included East India Company captains, Darien scheme promoters, a signatory of the 1707 Union, and a naval officer who fought at the Battle of Camperdown, alongside later figures involved in evangelical missionary work.
Gardens & grounds
The grounds include St Mungo's Chapel and an ancient drovers' road that crosses the estate.
