About this place
Goodwood House has been owned by the Dukes of Richmond since the late seventeenth century, when the first Duke acquired the estate as a hunting lodge.
The house stands in the West Sussex downs and was substantially remodelled in the early nineteenth century to reach its current form.
James Wyatt was among the architects involved in shaping the building, which forms three sides of an octagon; whether this was part of a grander unfinished plan has never been firmly established.
It is a working aristocratic estate and remains the private home of the Duke of Richmond.
The house is perhaps best known as the centrepiece of a wider estate that also contains the motor circuit and racecourse that have made the family name famous well beyond Sussex.
