Grimsthorpe Castle stands in Lincolnshire, near Bourne, on a site with origins in the twelfth century, said to have been begun by Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln, around 1140.
The castle has been the seat of the Willoughby de Eresby family for over five hundred years and remains in private family ownership.
Sir John Vanbrugh was commissioned to redesign the north front in 1715, with construction commencing in the early 1720s, and the result is considered among his finest and most ambitious works.
The castle and its parkland are open to the public on a seasonal basis, managed by the Grimsthorpe and Drummond Castle Trust.
