About this place
Hardwick Hall was built in the 1590s for Bess of Hardwick, one of Elizabethan England's most powerful women, and stands in Ault Hucknall, Derbyshire.
The house is famous for its extraordinary quantity of glass, so much so that the old saying runs 'Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall'.
It holds one of the finest surviving collections of Elizabethan embroidery in the country.
The National Trust has cared for the property since 1959.
