Hasfield Court

History

A medieval manor on the site was home to the Pauncefoot family from around 1200, and Tudor panelling bearing the initials of Richard and Dorothy Pauncefoot survives inside. The present house was largely rebuilt in the late seventeenth century by John Parker, then passed through the hands of architect Thomas Fulljames, who owned it from 1847 to 1863. The Baker family bought Hasfield Court afterwards and have held it ever since, remodelling and extending the house through the Victorian period.

Architecture

William Baker and his brother, the Reverend Ralph Bourne Baker, refaced the house in French Mannerist Revival style between 1863 and 1865, and William Meath Baker added further extensions in 1888, all wrapped around a surviving sixteenth-century core.

Worth knowing

William Meath Baker was a close friend of Edward Elgar, who stayed at Hasfield on many occasions, and three members of the Baker family are portrayed among the Enigma Variations.

Gardens & grounds

The grounds include a Victorian walled kitchen garden, a beech maze and a croquet lawn. Terrace views extend across the Severn Vale to the Cotswold escarpment.
