About Hill House
Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed The Hill House in Helensburgh between 1902 and 1904 for Glasgow publisher Walter Blackie.
It is one of the most complete surviving examples of Mackintosh's domestic architecture, from the roughcast exterior to the interior furniture and fittings.
The National Trust for Scotland has cared for the property since 1982.
A striking protective steel structure now encloses the house, allowing its walls to dry out before conservation work continues.

Walter Blackie, head of the publishing firm Blackie and Son, commissioned the house and gave Mackintosh an unusually free hand over both structure and interior. Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh contributed significantly to the decorative scheme. The Blackie family lived there for decades before the house passed to the National Trust for Scotland in 1982.
Architecture of Hill House
Mackintosh drew on Scottish baronial and vernacular traditions, wrapping the house in grey roughcast render with minimal external ornament, while reserving his most inventive work for the interior layout, light and detailing.
Worth knowing
Since 2019 the house has been enclosed in a vast steel and mesh structure, nicknamed 'the box', built by the National Trust for Scotland to allow the original walls to dry out and halt decades of water damage. The protective enclosure has become a talking point for visitors.
Gardens & grounds at Hill House
The grounds include a garden laid out in keeping with Mackintosh's design, offering views back towards the house's distinctive silhouette.
