Holme Pierrepont Hall

History

Sir William Pierrepont built the hall as a brick manor house in the last decade of the fifteenth century, a rare material choice for Nottinghamshire at the time. The estate was sold in 1941 due to death duties, though descendants of the Pierrepont family through marriage, the Brackenbury family, continue to live in the house today. The Courtyard Garden was laid out in 1875, showing the changing tastes of successive generations. Both families' possessions remain in the house.

Architecture

The hall is Grade I listed and one of the few surviving brick-built houses of its period in Nottinghamshire, with Tudor structural features surviving alongside later additions such as the Victorian Courtyard Garden.

Worth knowing

The house has remained closely associated with the Pierrepont and Brackenbury families across centuries, a significant continuity for an English manor house of this age.

Gardens & grounds

The Grade II listed Courtyard Garden, designed in 1875 with a miniature box parterre, is best viewed from the first floor. The East Garden, laid out in 1973, hosts a rare wild tulip, Tulipa sylvestris.
