Kiplin Hall

History

The hall passed through four families connected by blood or marriage after Calvert's time, each leaving furniture, portraits and possessions that remain on display. During the Second World War the RAF requisitioned the house and estate. The kitchen and bathroom fitted out during that period survive largely unaltered.

Architecture

Kiplin Hall is a Jacobean country house, Grade I listed, built in the characteristic brick style of the period. Later Victorian refurbishment shaped the appearance of many rooms, giving them their current lived-in character.

Worth knowing

George Calvert, who built Kiplin Hall, went on to found the colony of Maryland in America and became the 1st Lord Baltimore, giving this Yorkshire house a direct line to the naming of Baltimore itself.

Gardens & grounds

Garden restoration has progressively added new areas including rose, white, sensory and bog gardens alongside woodland and lakeside walks.
