About this place
Manderston House stands at Duns in Berwickshire, rebuilt between 1901 and 1903 for Sir James Miller, 2nd Baronet.
The architect John Kinross was given no budget constraint, and the result includes a marble hall and a staircase plated in silver.
It remains a family home, seat of the Palmer family, and opens to visitors on set days each year.
Historic Houses members can visit free of charge.

Sir James Miller commissioned the rebuilding of an earlier house on the site, instructing the architect that cost was no object—a brief that produced one of Scotland's most lavish Edwardian interiors. The house later passed to the Palmer family, who still live there and manage its opening to the public. It is a Category A listed building, and its grounds are recorded in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland.
Architecture
John Kinross designed the house in a grand Edwardian classical style, with a marble entrance hall and the celebrated silver staircase as its centrepiece.
Gardens & grounds
The estate includes formal gardens and a stable block of notable quality.
