Marchmont is a Grade A listed Palladian mansion built in 1750 for the 3rd Earl of Marchmont, set within a 5,500-acre estate near Greenlaw in the Scottish Borders.

The design is attributed to William Adam and was executed by Thomas Gibson.

The house contains some of the finest surviving George II interiors in Scotland, including exceptional plasterwork by Thomas Clayton, regarded as the pre-eminent plasterer of that period.

Sir Robert Lorimer enlarged the building between 1914 and 1917, adding to its architectural layers.

The current owners completed an extensive restoration, which was recognised with a Historic Houses Award.

The property is supported by Historic Houses and opens to the public for guided tours and special events.

History

The 3rd Earl of Marchmont commissioned the house in 1750, with the design attributed to William Adam and executed by Thomas Gibson. Between 1914 and 1917, the Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer enlarged the building, adding to its layered architectural history. The current owners completed an extensive restoration, which was recognised with a Historic Houses Award.

Worth knowing
