About this place

Mertoun House stands by the River Tweed, two miles east of St Boswells in the Scottish Borders.

Sir William Bruce designed the house in 1703 for Sir William Scott of Harden, and it remains a private home today as the seat of the Duke of Sutherland.

The gardens are open to the public and appear on the national Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland.

It sits within a working estate of farms, forestry and fishing rather than a preserved showpiece.

Architecture

Mertoun House is an early 18th-century A-listed building designed by Sir William Bruce, one of Scotland's leading classical architects of the period.
