About this place
Millichope Park is a Greek Revival mansion built between 1835 and 1840 by architect Edward Haycock for Reverend Norgrave Pemberton, Rector of Church Stretton.
The house stands in extensive parkland; its formal garden, Grade II* listed, covers approximately 25 acres and includes large lakes and cascades.
Six Ionic pillars support the pedimented portico at the front.
The garden contains a memorial temple designed by George Steuart, also Grade II* listed, which predates the house itself and stands on a cliff above one of the lakes.
Historic Houses lists Millichope Park among its member properties, though entry is not free even for members.

The More family acquired Lower Millichope in 1544. In 1689, Thomas More inherited the estate and began laying out its pleasure park. Ownership passed through his daughter Catherine to a cousin, Robert Pemberton, and then to Norgrave Pemberton, who commissioned the present house to replace an earlier black-and-white timbered building. Pemberton left the estate to his cousin Charles Orlando Childe, whose son sold it in 1896 to Captain Beckwith, whose family has held it ever since.
Architecture
Edward Haycock of Shrewsbury built the house in ashlar to a rectangular plan, giving it a five-window frontage and a two-storey elevation behind the six-columned Ionic portico. It is Grade II* listed.
Worth knowing
The garden's memorial temple, built by architect George Steuart and Grade II* listed in its own right, predates the house and commemorates members of the More family.
Gardens & grounds
The Grade II* landscaped garden covers approximately 25 acres and includes large lakes and cascades. The Steuart temple stands dramatically on a steep cliff above the water.
