The house was built in 1701 for Charles Mompesson, a local MP, on land within the Cathedral Close that had belonged to the church since medieval times. It passed through several owners and tenants over the following two centuries before the National Trust acquired it in 1975. The interior holds a significant collection of 18th-century English drinking glasses.
Architecture of Mompesson House
A well-preserved example of Queen Anne architecture, with a symmetrical brick facade and an elaborately carved oak staircase rising through the centre of the building. The plasterwork ceilings, particularly in the drawing room, are considered some of the finest of their period in the Close.
Worth knowing
Mompesson House appeared as a filming location for the 1995 film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, standing in for one of the story's grand interiors.
Gardens & grounds at Mompesson House
A walled garden behind the house offers a quiet spot with a tea-room, smaller in scale than the house itself but a popular stop for visitors to the Close.
