About Muchelney Abbey
Muchelney Abbey stands on the Somerset Levels, about a mile south of Langport.
Monastic life at the site reaches back to the 7th or 8th century, when King Ine founded it; after Viking raids it was refounded as a Benedictine house in the late 10th century.
The Dissolution of 1538 saw most of the church and cloister demolished for their stone.
The abbot's lodging survives largely intact, with its original kitchen and furnished rooms still in place.
English Heritage manages the site today.

The abbey was founded by King Ine in the 8th century and was damaged by Viking raids before being refounded as a Benedictine house in the late 10th century. It grew wealthy on farmland and fishing rights along the River Parrett. Henry VIII's commissioners dissolved it in 1538. Much of the church and cloister buildings were pulled down afterwards for their stone, leaving the abbot's lodging as the principal survivor. The remains later passed into private hands before being brought into state guardianship.
Architecture of Muchelney Abbey
The abbot's lodging, built around 1500, keeps its original kitchen with a large open fireplace and a panelled parlour, both unusual survivals from a monastic household. The footings of the cloister and the abbey church are traced out in the surrounding turf, giving a sense of the building's original scale.
