About Neath Abbey
Sir Richard de Granville founded Neath Abbey in 1130 on the banks of the River Neath near Dyffryn Clydach in south Wales.
It grew into one of the wealthiest Cistercian abbeys in the country before its religious life ended at the Dissolution.
Centuries later the ruins were converted into a copper smelting works, with furnaces and workers' cottages built among the medieval remains.
Cadw now cares for the site and entry is free.

By the late 13th century Neath Abbey had become one of the richest monastic houses in Wales, home to around 50 monks and a larger body of lay brothers who worked the abbey's estates, including coal mining for domestic use. After the Dissolution the site passed through private hands and, during the Industrial Revolution, was converted into a copper smelting plant with an ironworks built alongside it. It is now in the care of Cadw.
Architecture of Neath Abbey
Much of the original Cistercian ground plan survives, giving a clear sense of the abbey's scale even in ruin. Later industrial additions, including furnace bases and workers' dwellings, sit awkwardly among the medieval remains.
Worth knowing
Alongside Tintern Abbey and Llanthony Priory, Neath Abbey is considered one of the most important monastic ruins in south Wales. During the Industrial Revolution its cloisters and buildings were adapted into a working copper smelting plant, with furnaces and workers' housing built directly into the medieval fabric.
