Newhailes House sits on the outskirts of Musselburgh, East Lothian, and dates to around 1686.

The National Trust for Scotland cares for the property, which is accessible to visitors through NTS membership.

It is particularly known for its rococo interiors, which survive in unusually intact condition and represent some of the finest decorative work of their period in Scotland.

The Dalrymple family, who acquired the estate in the early eighteenth century, were closely associated with Scottish Enlightenment intellectual life and used the library as a gathering place for leading thinkers of the age.

The grounds include a designed landscape with mature woodland and a shell grotto, an uncommon survival of eighteenth-century ornamental garden architecture in Scotland.

History

The house was built around 1686 and passed through several notable Scottish families over the following centuries. Architecture

The main house is a compact classical mansion, with later additions that extended the original block. The rococo plasterwork in the principal rooms is considered among the best-preserved of its kind in Scotland.
