About this place

North Court was built in 1615 by Sir John Leigh, deputy governor of the Isle of Wight, replacing an earlier monastic building on the site.

It is the largest of the island's Jacobean manor houses.

The grounds retain a serpentine mount and walks laid out in the seventeenth century.

Sir Henry Percy Gordon later expanded the estate to around 2,500 acres across five farms.

John and Christine Harrison bought North Court in 1984 and have restored the house and its gardens, which are recognised as of national importance.

The poet Algernon Swinburne was a frequent visitor to the house.
