About this place
Nunnington Hall stands beside the River Rye in North Yorkshire, with a stone bridge linking its grounds to the village below.
A house on this site was first recorded in the thirteenth century, though most of what visitors see today was rebuilt in the 1680s.
The hall passed through an unusually varied line of owners over the centuries, each altering the building to suit their own time.
The National Trust manages the property and its grounds as a visitor attraction.

A house on the site was first mentioned in the thirteenth century. Among its owners was the physician Dr Robert Huicke. Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston, owned the hall in the 1680s and carried out the rebuilding that shaped most of the present house. In later centuries it belonged to the Rutson family and then the Fife family before coming into National Trust care.
Architecture
The hall is a combination of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century work, with the bulk of the current structure dating from Richard Graham's rebuilding in the 1680s.
