About this place

For much of the twentieth century, Orford Ness was closed to the public as a secret military testing site on the Suffolk coast.

The site is a shingle spit — Europe's largest vegetated shingle spit — stretching along the shore between Aldeburgh and Shingle Street.

The structures left behind include the Pagodas, concrete buildings designed so their roofs would collapse inward if an explosion occurred during atomic weapons research.

The National Trust has managed it since 1993, and access is by ferry from Orford Quay.
