Built in 1698 by Sir James Tillie, Pentillie came to the Coryton family through marriage when Tillie's daughter Mary Jemima married Peter Coryton. The estate has remained continuously in Coryton hands since that union. The grounds were landscaped by Humphry Repton, whose work on English country estates spanned the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, giving Pentillie its distinctive woodland setting above the Tamar.
Architecture of Pentillie Castle
The castle is a Grade II* listed building dating from 1698. Its castellated appearance reflects remodelling typical of country houses given a romantic, castle-like treatment in the centuries following its construction.
