History of Peover Hall

The hall was built in 1585 for Sir Ralph Mainwaring, whose family held the estate for generations. Local tradition suggests it served as a headquarters during the Second World War, though this claim lacks official documentation. Ownership passed out of the Mainwaring line in the twentieth century, and the house remains privately held today.

Architecture of Peover Hall

The hall is built of brick in the Elizabethan style typical of Cheshire gentry houses of the period. Its stable block, added in the mid-17th century, is widely regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of its kind in the country.

Worth knowing

Local tradition holds that the hall may have served military purposes during the Second World War, though this is not confirmed in official records.

Gardens & grounds at Peover Hall

The grounds include a walled garden and a long lime avenue, which have occasionally opened to visitors through charity garden schemes.
