About this place

Plas Newydd is a country house on the banks of the Menai Strait in Anglesey, Wales.

Its origins date to 1470, and it was substantially remodelled by James Wyatt from the 1790s onwards.

The house was home to the Marquesses of Anglesey for generations.

The National Trust has cared for it since 1976.

Its most singular feature is a vast mural by Rex Whistler, painted across an entire wall of the dining room.

It is Whistler's largest work and the largest canvas painting in the United Kingdom.
