About this place

Powderham Castle has been the seat of the Courtenay family, the Earls of Devon, since the fourteenth century.

It stands on the western bank of the Exe Estuary in Devon, looking out over the water and surrounding landscape.

The same family has held it for over six hundred years, one of the longer unbroken private tenures of any English country house.

The exterior was remodelled in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, giving it a very different appearance from its origins as a fortified manor house.

It was never a true fortress in the military sense: it had no keep or moat, and the castle-like elements on the west front were largely added in the nineteenth century.
