About Quy Hall
Quy Hall is a Grade II* listed country house at Stow cum Quy in Cambridgeshire, five miles east of Cambridge.
The exterior displays striped brickwork and Dutch gabling, the result of a Victorian remodelling that retained the footprint of a much older structure with fifteenth-century origins.
It remains a private family home, with visits arranged through Historic Houses.
The walled kitchen garden and ha-ha overlooking parkland are notable features.

The house has fifteenth-century origins, but what stands today is largely the work of Cambridge solicitor Clement Francis, who bought Quy Hall in 1855 and commissioned architect William White to remodel it in the late 1860s and early 1870s, substantially retaining the old floorplan. The painted murals in the reception rooms were executed by Henry Davies, who also worked on the vaults of Ely Cathedral. The Francis family has held the house ever since, though much of the original furniture was sold in the 2000s.
Architecture of Quy Hall
William White's late 1860s and early 1870s remodelling gave the house its striped brickwork and Dutch-gabled rear elevation, with three main reception rooms carrying elaborate painted wall and ceiling decoration in his own design.
Worth knowing
The painted interiors were executed by Henry Davies, the same artist responsible for the painted vaults of Ely Cathedral.
Gardens & grounds at Quy Hall
The grounds include a walled kitchen garden with orchard trees, a terrace with a long rose border, and a ha-ha giving open views over parkland towards the village.
