About this place
Renishaw Hall has been in the Sitwell family for over four centuries, making it one of the longest family-owned estates in Derbyshire.
The hall sits on the edge of the Renishaw estate near Eckington, and its formal gardens are the main draw for visitors today.
The Italianate gardens were designed and laid out by Sir George Sitwell, beginning in 1886 and continuing through to 1936.
Sir George was an obsessive and highly individual garden theorist.
He wrote a treatise on the subject, 'On the Making of Gardens', which became a minor classic of garden writing.
