About this place

The Ingilby family have been associated with Ripley Castle in North Yorkshire for over 700 years, having first acquired it in 1308/9, making it one of England's longest continuously inhabited family seats.

The castle sits at the edge of the estate village of Ripley, which Sir William Amcotts-Ingilby largely rebuilt in the 1830s in the style of an Alsatian village, a project completed with the Hotel de Ville in 1854.

The house contains a fine collection of arms, armour, and family portraits accumulated across those centuries.

The estate was put on the market in 2024 and guided castle tours have been suspended since February 2025 pending the sale, though the grounds and gardens remain open.

Check the official website for current visitor information.
