About Seaton Delaval Hall

Seaton Delaval Hall stands near the Northumberland coast, just north of Newcastle upon Tyne, between the villages of Seaton Sluice and Seaton Delaval.

Sir John Vanbrugh designed it in 1718 for Admiral George Delaval, and the house was completed in 1728.

The central block was gutted by fire in 1822 and has stood as a roofless shell ever since, giving the hall a distinctive unfinished presence unlike most country houses open to visitors.

The National Trust now cares for the property.

History of Seaton Delaval Hall

Neither Vanbrugh nor Admiral Delaval lived to see the house finished, as both died before its completion in 1728. The estate then passed through a series of Delaval heirs who occupied it only intermittently, a pattern that continued until the fire of 1822 left the central block an empty ruin. The hall is Grade I listed, and its grounds are separately registered Grade II* for their historic design.

Architecture of Seaton Delaval Hall

Vanbrugh designed the hall in the English Baroque style, the architectural idiom he also used at Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard, with a central block flanked by projecting wings and colonnades. The surviving wings remain roofed and furnished even though the centre block has stood open to the sky since the 1822 fire.

Worth knowing

The hall was one of Vanbrugh's last major commissions before his death in 1726, completed without either architect or patron ever seeing it finished.

Gardens & grounds at Seaton Delaval Hall

The 18th-century gardens are Grade II* listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, laid out to complement Vanbrugh's formal design.
