About Sheringham Hall

Sheringham Hall is a Grade II* listed mansion built between 1813 and 1819 for Abbot Upcher, a Norfolk landowner.

Designed by John Adey Repton and set in parkland laid out by his father Humphry Repton, the house was conceived as a 'modern Italian villa' with a modest front concealing two larger wings.

Humphry Repton regarded Sheringham as his favourite commission in Norfolk.

The Upcher family owned the estate for generations; the current owners, Paul Doyle and Gergely Battha-Pajor, hold the long leasehold and have restored the grounds.

The hall remains privately owned and is open by arrangement.

It is part of the Historic Houses network.

History of Sheringham Hall

The Upcher family held Sheringham for generations after Abbot Upcher's death in 1819. In the twentieth century, Tom Upcher, the last Upcher owner, led a revival of the house and grounds. The current owners, Paul Doyle and Gergely Battha-Pajor, hold the long leasehold of the Hall and manage the wider estate.

Architecture of Sheringham Hall

John Adey Repton, who trained in the office of John Nash, designed the house as a 'modern Italian villa' with a modest south-facing front concealing two much larger wings set at right angles behind it. The arrangement, worked out with his father Humphry Repton, kept the mansion from dominating the landscape in the way earlier eighteenth-century houses often did.

Worth knowing

The National Trust owns the surrounding Sheringham Park, but its members have no automatic right of access to the Hall's grounds, which remain privately managed by the estate's owners.
