About this place
Silbury Hill, built around 2400 BC, is the largest prehistoric man-made mound in Europe.
It rises to approximately 39.3 metres near Avebury in Wiltshire, close to some of Britain's most significant Neolithic monuments.
English Heritage manages the site, and entry to the surrounding area is free.
The hill itself cannot be climbed.
Nobody knows why it was built, and that mystery has drawn antiquarians, archaeologists and curious visitors for centuries.
