Sion Hill Hall is a historic house in England, and a member of Historic Houses. Read about its history, architecture and gardens, plus how to visit and what's nearby.

About Sion Hill Hall

Walter Brierley designed Sion Hill Hall in 1913, making it one of the last stately homes built in Yorkshire before the First World War.

The house stands at Kirby Wiske, near Thirsk in North Yorkshire, and is built in the neo-Georgian style.

Its five acres of gardens include a woodland walk and a formal parterre, both restored to complement the house.

The property is open by prior arrangement for guided group tours, and gardens occasionally open under the National Garden Scheme.

History of Sion Hill Hall

The hall was commissioned by Percy Stancliffe and built on the site of the village's former manor house. Brierley completed the design in 1913. Historic England describes it as one of Brierley's most successful country houses, and it was grade II* listed in 1987. The property is now held by the H.W. Mawer Charitable Trust.

Architecture of Sion Hill Hall

The house is built of handmade red brick with Portland stone dressings, quoins and a floor band, under hipped tile roofs with oversailing eaves. Its central Portland stone bay has an Ionic doorcase with a fanlight and pediment, flanked by Venetian windows. The design drew inspiration from Edwin Lutyens' Middlefield House.

Gardens & grounds at Sion Hill Hall
